VMAP’s History
Milestones that made us who we are today.
2018
September: VMAP established through HRSA grant awarded to VDH in partnership with the Virginia Chapter, AAP.
December: VMAP holds first Stakeholder meeting.
2019
January: Virginia Governor’s budget includes $1.23M for VMAP, which supports implementing services in northern and eastern Virginia.
August: The VMAP Line opens with psychiatry consultations available statewide 32 hours per week.
2020
January:
- MSVF named VMAP program administrator by DBHDS
- Virginia Governor’s budget includes $4.22M to fund VMAP implementation statewide. Shortly after, funding frozen due to COVID-19.
July: VMAP increases VMAP Line psychiatry consultation coverage to 40 hours/week and introduces an online consultation request process.
October: First regional hub services initiated in VMAP’s northern region out of Inova and Children’s National Hospital (CNH), including care navigation and licensed mental health professionals (LMHPs) to assist with VMAP Line consultations with PCPs.
November: VMAP funding restored during Virginia Special Session, allowing VMAP to continue expanding statewide
2021
January: VMAP initiates regional hub services in its eastern region out of Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD).
May: The VMAP Line hits 1,000 calls.
July: VMAP regional hub services initiated in its southwest region out of Mt. Rogers CSB.
August: VMAP regional hub services initiated in its central region out of the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU.
2022
February:
- VMAP receives an additional 2.4 million from the Virginia General Assembly to expand into early childhood
- VMAP initiates first specialized ECHO on ages 0-5
- The VMAP Line hits 2,000 calls
March: VMAP regional hub services initiated in its western region out of UVA and Centra.
November: VMAP launches Recognized Provider Badge for VMAP-trained providers.
2023
January: VMAP launches additional early childhood specialized ECHOs.
March: VMAP adds early childhood specialists to VMAP Line.
September:
- The VMAP Line hits 6,000 calls.
- VMAP receives an additional 3.9 million from the Virginia General Assembly to launch a new perinatal program and continue early childhood expansion.
December:
- VMAP Pilots Triple P program as part of early childhood expansion.
- VMAP pilots Emergency Department (ED) pediatric mental health trainings for ED providers.
2024
January:
- VMAP Line regional hubs are fully staffed statewide.
- VMAP begins work on Moms+ perinatal expansion
March: The VMAP Line hits 7,000 Calls.
April: The VMAP Line’s early childhood extension goes live – “Press 6 for Under 6”
