- Questions and Answers Addressing the Needs of Children with Disabilities and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act’s (IDEA’s) Discipline Provisions discusses how certain school actions, such as informal removals and the use of threat assessments, may result in the denial of FAPE to children with disabilities.
- Positive, Proactive Approaches to Supporting the Needs of Children with Disabilities: A Guide for Stakeholders offers evidence-based strategies that early childhood programs, schools, and local educational agencies (LEAs) can use in place of exclusionary discipline or other harmful practices such as restraint or seclusion.
- Family Medical Leave Act: Autism, many chronic or long-term physical illnesses, and many psychiatric and developmental disabilities fall within the law’s coverage. FMLA leave also permits parents to obtain temporary reductions in work schedules.
- Center for Parent Information & Resources (CPIR): This national organization offers resources to build caregivers’ knowledge and skills in advocating for optimal educational experiences for children with complex needs. You can Find an Education Advocate by State through CPIR.
- Understood.org: This is an organization that provides guidance to people with unique learning needs, including information about disabilities, education law and policy, and caregiver perspectives.
- A Day in Our Shoes: A Day in Our Shoes is an organization led by special education advocate Lisa Lightner that shares information and resources for caregivers of children with disabilities so they can make the best decisions in developing IEPs for their children.
