How VMAP Supports Clinicians Across Virginia

Published On: October 20th, 2026

We have received over 13,000 calls to the VMAP Line regarding pediatric patients in Virginia. As we continue to grow, we want to better understand the communities that are reaching out for support.

VMAP Callers By Region

When we break down callers by region, we see that even though it varies greatly, the proportions are reflective of the regional breakdown of pediatric populations. None of these regions or their localities have a sufficient supply of child and adolescent psychiatrists for their populations, but we tend to see worse shortages in rural or remote areas. In these areas, mental health resources are not available or require substantial travel to more populated areas. It’s important to us that our program is available across all types of communities, including metropolitan (population = 50k+), micropolitan (10-50k), small town (2.5-10k), and rural (>2.5k) areas.

We have received over 13,000 calls to the VMAP Line regarding pediatric patients in Virginia. As we continue to grow, we want to better understand the communities that are reaching out for support.

Our regional hubs (as seen above!) are divided with this in mind, with teams prepared to support their community. For example, the majority of callers in the Northern region are practicing in the DC metro area or a close commutable location. In contrast, most callers in the Southwest region practice in a small town or rural area commuting zone. These practices have different resources available to them in their area and unique patient needs, which is why our regional hubs are poised to support Virginia clinicians in every kind of community.

No matter where you practice in Virginia, you can utilize VMAP and its family of mental health access programs (which include VMAP for Moms+ and APAL!) under HealthHaven to support your patients!
